Kathy Fester, a long-time music educator and advocate joined me to talk about the importance of music education and music engagement at ALL ages. Her enthusiasm and sheer joy made this one of my favorite interviews of all time.
Whether you’re a parent trying to decide if it’s worthwhile to spend money on music lessons, or a senior struggling a bit with loneliness or some cognitive decline, you will be sure to find this conversation enlightening, entertaining, and inspiring.
As Kathy says, “Music puts a smile in the heart.”

Her passion for music advocacy has put her in leadership roles in many associations and inspired her to complete her Masters Degree from Simon Fraser University to expand on the knowledge of all the Arts as they affect the brain.
The “Power of Music” in our lives is a passion that lives in the heart and mind. Kathy continues to advocate daily to bring music into the curriculum of our schools to the level of being a ‘core subject’ equal to reading and writing in our school system rather than a “frill”.
Music isn’t just something that we listen to – it is the “heart of soul” of humanity.
Some Key Points:

7:51 Music changes the brain structurally and what that means for success later in life
14:00 Listening to Music: essential for emotional and mental health, but creating music is so much more
16:00 For parents and educators: recommendation of a fantastic book to understand the many reasons music education is essential for brain and mental health and success. Music education can even help you learn to read better.

23:00 How music benefits stroke patients and those who are suffering with dementia
28:27 Music puts a smile in the heart
30:25 Why are humans so wired for sound?

The Seeds of Alzheimer’s are Planted in Childhood
We know that poor dental health including gingivitis has a direct effect on inflammation and the health of the body and brain. But what most people don’t realize is how the actual form and function of the jaw can also contribute to the risk of developing Alzheimer’s.
Since jaws develop during childhood, this episode of Brain Health Matters with Dr. Scott Saunders of Healthy Mouth Media will be of special importance to parents and grandparents because we can help prevent a lifetime of misery by attending to this issue early in life.
Some of the points Dr. Saunders shared with Kate:

Good Vibrations!
Good, Good, Good, Good Vibrations. (Gotcha singing?) We are all vibrating all of the time. Everything is in a state of vibration all of the time. When something with a negative vibration intersects with our vibration, we feel bad. That can be anger, fear, hate…. those emotions emit a vibration just as much as a jet engine over our head or a boom box disrupting a quiet morning on the beach. (I speak from experience here.)
On the other hand, positive feelings like joy, appreciation, and passion vibrate at high frequencies. These high frequency vibrations make us feel good, and that’s why we call them “good vibrations”. We can also create these good vibrations with music, and it doesn’t mean you have to be “good” at creating music. Just be yourself. Today, on Brain Health Matters, with special guest Diane Annie Mathias, you’ll learn how to capture and utilize the vibration-raising power of music and sound and silence to become healthier and happier.
With respect to silence, Annie says, “Being a part of the whole, in the silence, is a powerful place to be.” This is one of the most powerful and beautiful episodes we’ve ever done on Brain Health Matters.
